My flight was canceled
A cancellation is different from a delay: you now have rights you did not have before, and a wider set of options. In the US, if your flight is canceled for any reason and you choose not to travel, you are generally entitled to a cash refund rather than a voucher, even on a non-refundable ticket. That comes from federal rules, not airline policy.
⏱
Cancellations cascade. Every hour you wait, the rebooking pool shrinks across the whole region.
1
Decide in two minutes: do you still need to go?
This is the fork. If the trip no longer makes sense, you may be owed a full cash refund to your original payment method. Say the word "refund" and decline the voucher. If you still need to get there, move to step two fast.
Say this, word for word
My flight was canceled and I no longer wish to travel. I am requesting a cash refund to my original form of payment, not a travel credit.
2
Rebook yourself in the app before talking to anyone
Most airline apps allow self-rebooking during a cancellation, and the app is not standing in a line. Do this while walking toward the desk. If the app offers something workable, take it - you can keep looking afterward.
3
Then widen the search beyond your airline
Your airline shows you its own flights only. That is the single biggest blind spot travelers have. There may be a seat on another carrier, or out of an airport 60 miles away, that gets you there hours sooner.
If you buy a ticket on another airline yourself, your original ticket does not vanish - the unflown portion comes back as a refund or credit. Ask about it, in writing.
4
Ask about hotel and meals if you are stuck overnight
If the cancellation was within the airline’s control, most major US carriers have committed to covering a hotel and meals. They do not always offer. Ask at the desk rather than by phone so you get the voucher in hand.
Say this, word for word
Since this cancellation was within your control, will you provide hotel accommodation and meal vouchers for tonight?
5
Take the ground option seriously
For trips under about 300 miles, a train, bus, or rental car frequently beats waiting for tomorrow morning - especially in the Northeast, California, and the Pacific Northwest. This is the option novice travelers almost never consider, and it is often the right one.
Canceled on an EU or UK route? There may be cash on top.
Departing the EU or UK, or arriving on an EU or UK carrier, a cancellation notified less than 14 days ahead generally pays EU261 or UK261 fixed compensation of €250 to €600 (£220 to £520) per passenger, on top of the refund or rebooking, unless the airline proves extraordinary circumstances or rebooked you close to your original times. What most people get wrong
✕
Accepting a travel voucher when a cash refund may be available. Vouchers expire; money does not.
✕
Assuming the airline searched every option. It typically searched its own flights only.
✕
Waiting until you reach the front of the line to start thinking about what to ask for.
✕
Forgetting that a canceled leg on a multi-leg ticket still has refundable value.
