Stuck at the airport · LGA

Stuck at LGA? Here is exactly what to do.

Canceled or badly delayed at New York LaGuardia: Terminal B and C are newly rebuilt with clear service desks - get in line and work the airline app while you stand in it. Terminals are not connected airside, so allow real time between them. JFK is a 30-minute drive and Newark about 50, each with a whole second schedule, and if nothing works you are owed a full cash refund. Details below. Facts reviewed August 2026.

Right now: reach an agent fast

Rebooking desks

Terminal B and C are newly rebuilt with clear service desks. Any gate agent for your carrier can also rebook you - during a meltdown, a quiet gate's agent often beats the service-desk line. Work the airline app in parallel; whichever answers first wins.

Moving between terminals

Terminals are not connected airside. Allow real time between them - reaching another terminal means leaving the secure area and re-clearing security. A realistic minimum connection at LGA is about 60 minutes; tighter than that and you should be asking an agent to protect you on the next flight now, not running.

The backup airports: JFK and Newark

JFK is about 12 miles away, roughly a 30-minute drive. Newark (EWR) is about 24 miles, roughly a 50-minute drive. Each runs a whole second schedule when LaGuardia's board turns red. Booking a different airline does not burn your money: if your LGA flight was canceled and you do not travel on it, the unused ticket comes back as a refund or credit.

Train instead of plane?

No. There is no direct rail link to the terminal - it is bus to subway, or rideshare - and a train cannot replace a canceled flight at LGA. If your trip can flex, the honest alternatives are JFK, Newark, or driving.

Stuck overnight

Ask the airline what it covers before you book anything: most large US carriers commit to a hotel, or reimbursement, when an overnight disruption was in their control (mechanical, crew) - weather is usually on you. Lock in tomorrow's seat before hunting for a bed; seats vanish faster than rooms. Lounges if you hold access: Delta Sky Club (C) and American (B).

What the airline owes you

Canceled and you choose not to travel: a full cash refund to your original payment method under US DOT rules, on any fare type, whatever the cause - a voucher only replaces it if you knowingly accept one. Checked a bag? Here is exactly what happens to it and when the bag fee comes back. The full rundown with figures: Know Your Rights.
