Know your rights · American Airlines

Canceled on American? Your actual options, right now.

Open the American app and rebook yourself before you reach any line - American's strong domestic network means a same-airline alternative usually exists. If American cannot get you there, ask to be protected on a partner airline. Everything below is sourced and dated. Facts reviewed August 2026.

The short answer

Try the app first, then work an agent in parallel. When you reach a human, use two asks from TripHero's playbook: ask to be protected on a later flight, and ask specifically about interlining to a partner - American's partners include Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and Qatar Airways. If the cancellation was in American's control, meals after a 3-hour wait and a hotel for an overnight are committed. If you decide not to travel at all, federal rules owe you a full cash refund of the unused ticket, on any fare type.

First move: the app, with a line as backup

American supports self-service rebooking during disruptions - open the American app before you join any line, per TripHero's airline knowledge base. Then run both channels at once: hold your place in the agent line (or at a gate for your carrier) while the app searches. Whichever answers first wins; nothing about using the app stops you from taking a better option an agent finds.

There is no verified shortcut phone number worth printing here - TripHero does not publish phone numbers or call tricks our knowledge base has not verified. The app plus a parallel line is the documented play.

What American can actually rebook you on

American first. American's network is the argument for staying with American: hubs at DFW, CLT, ORD, MIA, PHL, PHX, DCA, LAX, and JFK mean a same-airline alternative usually exists - use that first, including routings through a different American hub. For cancellations within its control, American's US DOT customer service dashboard entry (recorded January 2026) includes a commitment to rebook you on its own flights.

Then the partners. American interlines. TripHero's knowledge base lists Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and Qatar Airways as partners, and the same dashboard entry records a commitment to rebook on a partner airline for controllable cancellations. It is an ask, not an automatic - say the words "can you interline me to a partner" rather than waiting for it to be offered.

Hotels and meals: committed, with limits

Controllable cancellations - mechanical, crew, airline IT

American's DOT dashboard entry (recorded January 2026) commits to meals after a 3-hour wait and a hotel for an overnight when the cause was in American's control. TripHero's operational notes add: hotel and meal vouchers for controllable overnight delays are issued on request - ask at the desk rather than waiting for an offer.

Weather and air traffic control - the honest limits

Those care commitments apply to controllable disruptions only. In a weather or ATC event, American owes you rebooking or a refund, but generally not meals or a hotel. The refund right below applies regardless of cause.

Cash compensation

Unlike the EU, US federal law requires no cash compensation for the delay or cancellation itself, and American has no cash-compensation commitment recorded on the DOT dashboard. Separate EU or UK rules can apply on international itineraries touching those regions.

Concretely: canceled on an American flight departing the EU or UK with less than 14 days' notice, EU261 or UK261 compensation of €250 to €600 (£220 to £520) per passenger can apply unless American proves extraordinary circumstances. Claiming direct is free and Know Your Rights gives you the words. If you would rather hand it off, AirHelp files the claim and deals with the airline for you, for a cut of the payout only if it wins.

The refund baseline - any fare, any cause

Cash back if you do not travel

A cancellation is a significant change under the US DOT automatic-refund rule (14 CFR Part 260, effective October 2024). Choose not to travel on the alternative American offers and you are owed a full refund of the unused ticket, in cash, to your original payment method - on any fare type, including basic economy. A voucher can replace it only if you affirmatively choose one, and a credit offered for a canceled flight must stay valid for at least 5 years. Refunds are due within 7 business days on a credit card, 20 calendar days for other payment methods.

If you book your own way out

The refund covers the unused portion of your ticket - not the new ticket you buy elsewhere, and American does not owe the fare difference. Already flew the first leg? The refund applies to the unused legs. Accept American's rebooking and fly it, and no refund is owed - you flew.

Checked a bag? The bag fee comes back if the bag is not delivered within 12 hours of a domestic gate arrival (15 to 30 hours international) - here is exactly what happens to your bag after a cancellation. Fees for services you paid for and did not receive - wifi, seat selection - must also be refunded.

When a different airport or the ground wins

Because American's own network is deep, exhaust American metal and partner interlining first. When the day is truly gone, the refund math above means booking your own seat - from the same airport or a nearby one - does not burn your original fare, and it is worth checking whether a train or bus arrives sooner than the next open seat.
