Rebook yourself in the United app first. If United cannot get you there, name the alliance - United rebooks onto partners readily when you ask about Star Alliance options - and ask about a routing through a different United hub. Details and refund rules below. Facts reviewed August 2026.
App first, agent in parallel. Two United-specific asks from TripHero's playbook: name the alliance - United rebooks onto partners readily if you ask about Star Alliance options, and its listed partners include Lufthansa, Air Canada, ANA, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and EVA Air - and ask about a different hub, because United's hub structure means a misconnect often has a same-day fix through ORD, DEN, IAH, EWR, SFO, IAD, or LAX. Controllable cancellation? Meals after 3 hours and an overnight hotel are committed. Not traveling? A full cash refund is the federal baseline.
United supports self-service rebooking during disruptions - open the United app before you join any line, per TripHero's airline knowledge base. Then run both channels at once: hold your place in the agent line (or at a gate for your carrier) while the app searches. Whichever answers first wins.
There is no verified shortcut phone number worth printing here - TripHero does not publish phone numbers or call tricks our knowledge base has not verified. The app plus a parallel line is the documented play.
United first, through any hub. United's hub structure - ORD, DEN, IAH, EWR, SFO, IAD, LAX - means a canceled connection often has a same-day fix through a different hub. Ask the agent to try another routing rather than waiting on the same one. For cancellations within its control, United's US DOT customer service dashboard entry (recorded January 2026) includes a commitment to rebook you on its own flights.
Then the partners - name the alliance. TripHero's knowledge base is blunt: United rebooks onto partners readily if you name the alliance. Ask about Star Alliance options. Listed partners include Lufthansa, Air Canada, ANA, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and EVA Air, and the same dashboard entry records a commitment to rebook on a partner airline for controllable cancellations.
United's DOT dashboard entry (recorded January 2026) commits to meals after a 3-hour wait and a hotel for an overnight when the cause was in United's control. TripHero's operational notes add: ask at the desk for the voucher - hotel and meal coverage for controllable delays is there, but you often have to request it.
Those care commitments apply to controllable disruptions only. In a weather or ATC event, United owes you rebooking or a refund, but generally not meals or a hotel. The refund right below applies regardless of cause.
Unlike the EU, US federal law requires no cash compensation for the delay or cancellation itself, and United has no cash-compensation commitment recorded on the DOT dashboard. Separate EU or UK rules can apply on international itineraries touching those regions.
Concretely: canceled on a United flight departing the EU or UK with less than 14 days' notice, EU261 or UK261 compensation of €250 to €600 (£220 to £520) per passenger can apply unless United proves extraordinary circumstances. Claiming direct is free and Know Your Rights gives you the words. If you would rather hand it off, AirHelp files the claim and deals with the airline for you, for a cut of the payout only if it wins.
AirHelp pays TripHero a commission if you use them. Our advice is never influenced by who pays us.
A cancellation is a significant change under the US DOT automatic-refund rule (14 CFR Part 260, effective October 2024). Choose not to travel on the alternative United offers and you are owed a full refund of the unused ticket, in cash, to your original payment method - on any fare type, including basic economy. A voucher can replace it only if you affirmatively choose one, and a credit offered for a canceled flight must stay valid for at least 5 years. Refunds are due within 7 business days on a credit card, 20 calendar days for other payment methods.
The refund covers the unused portion of your ticket - not the new ticket you buy elsewhere, and United does not owe the fare difference. Already flew the first leg? The refund applies to the unused legs. Accept United's rebooking and fly it, and no refund is owed - you flew.
Checked a bag? The bag fee comes back if the bag is not delivered within 12 hours of a domestic gate arrival (15 to 30 hours international) - here is exactly what happens to your bag after a cancellation. Fees for services you paid for and did not receive - wifi, seat selection - must also be refunded.
United's different-hub trick is the first alternate-routing to try - it keeps you on your original ticket. When the day is truly gone, the refund math above means booking your own seat - from the same airport or a nearby one - does not burn your original fare, and it is worth checking whether a train or bus arrives sooner than the next open seat.
