Stuck at the airport · MDW

Stuck at MDW? Here is exactly what to do.

Canceled or badly delayed at Chicago Midway: Southwest dominates here, and gate agents rebook without ceremony - get in line and work the airline app in parallel. It is a single terminal with three concourses connected inside security, O'Hare and its whole big-airport schedule sit 25 miles away, and if nothing works you are owed a full cash refund. Details below. Facts reviewed August 2026.

Right now: reach an agent fast

Rebooking desks

Southwest dominates - gate agents rebook without ceremony. Get in line at a gate for your carrier and work the airline app in parallel; whichever answers first wins.

Moving between concourses

Single terminal, three concourses - all connected inside security, so never exit the secure area to reach another gate. A realistic minimum connection at MDW is about 35 minutes; tighter than that and you should be asking an agent to protect you on the next flight now, not running.

The backup airport: O'Hare, 25 miles away

Chicago O'Hare (ORD) is about a 45-minute drive - the whole big-airport schedule next door; we keep a separate O'Hare guide. Milwaukee (MKE) is about 95 miles, roughly a 1-hour-45-minute drive. Booking a different airline does not burn your money: if your MDW flight was canceled and you do not travel on it, the unused ticket comes back as a refund or credit.

Train instead of plane?

The Orange Line runs from Midway to the Loop - useful for reaching the city or a hotel. From the Loop it is a walk to Union Station for Amtrak, if your trip can flex onto rail.

Stuck overnight

Ask the airline what it covers before you book anything: most large US carriers commit to a hotel, or reimbursement, when an overnight disruption was in their control (mechanical, crew) - weather is usually on you. Lock in tomorrow's seat before hunting for a bed; seats vanish faster than rooms. Southwest has no lounge at Midway, so do not plan a night around lounge access here.

What the airline owes you

Canceled and you choose not to travel: a full cash refund to your original payment method under US DOT rules, on any fare type, whatever the cause - a voucher only replaces it if you knowingly accept one. Checked a bag? Here is exactly what happens to it and when the bag fee comes back. The full rundown with figures: Know Your Rights.
