Stuck at the airport · ORD

Stuck at ORD? Here is exactly what to do.

Canceled or badly delayed at Chicago O'Hare: United's hub is in Terminals 1 and 2, American's in Terminal 3 - any gate agent for your carrier can rebook you - and work the airline app while you stand in line. The ATS train runs between terminals inside security 24 hours, Midway is 25 miles away with a genuine second schedule, and if nothing works you are owed a full cash refund. Details below. Rebooking desks

United's hub is in Terminals 1 and 2, American's in Terminal 3. Any gate agent for that carrier can rebook you - during a meltdown, a quiet gate's agent often beats the service-desk line. Work the airline app in parallel; whichever answers first wins.

Moving between terminals

The ATS train runs inside security 24 hours - never exit the secure area to change terminals. A realistic minimum connection at ORD is about 60 minutes; tighter than that and you should be asking an agent to protect you on the next flight now, not running.

The backup airport: Midway, 25 miles away

Chicago Midway (MDW) is about a 45-minute drive - or the Blue Line plus Orange Line on transit. It is Southwest's field with a genuine second schedule, so when O'Hare's board turns red, Midway often still has seats; we keep a separate Midway guide. Milwaukee (MKE) is about 85 miles - a 1-hour-30-minute drive, or the Amtrak Hiawatha in about 90 minutes. Booking a different airline does not burn your money: if your ORD flight was canceled and you do not travel on it, the unused ticket comes back as a refund or credit.

Train instead of plane?

The Blue Line runs 24 hours to downtown Chicago - useful for reaching the city or a hotel at any hour. For Amtrak, reach Union Station via Clinton; the Hiawatha covers Milwaukee in about 90 minutes if your trip can flex that way.

Stuck overnight

Ask the airline what it covers before you book anything: most large US carriers commit to a hotel, or reimbursement, when an overnight disruption was in their control (mechanical, crew) - weather is usually on you. Lock in tomorrow's seat before hunting for a bed; seats vanish faster than rooms. Lounges if you hold access: United Club (Concourses B and C) and the American Flagship lounge (H/K).

What the airline owes you

Canceled and you choose not to travel: a full cash refund to your original payment method under US DOT rules, on any fare type, whatever the cause - a voucher only replaces it if you knowingly accept one. Checked a bag? Here is exactly what happens to it and when the bag fee comes back. The full rundown with figures: Know Your Rights.
