Stuck at the airport · MSP

Stuck at MSP? Here is exactly what to do.

Canceled or badly delayed at Minneapolis–St. Paul: Delta's hub is in Terminal 1 - efficient and well signed - so reach a gate agent for your carrier and work the airline app while you stand in line. Terminal 1 concourses connect airside, Terminal 2 is a separate building, the Blue Line light rail connects both terminals and downtown, and if nothing works you are owed a full cash refund. Details below. Facts reviewed August 2026.

Right now: reach an agent fast

Rebooking desks

Delta's hub is in Terminal 1 - efficient and well signed. Any gate agent for your carrier can rebook you; work the airline app in parallel, and whichever answers first wins.

Moving between terminals

Terminal 1 concourses connect airside; Terminal 2 is a separate building, and the Blue Line light rail connects both terminals. A realistic minimum connection at MSP is about 40 minutes; tighter than that and you should be asking an agent to protect you on the next flight now, not running.

The backup airport: Rochester, 85 miles away

Rochester (RST) is about a 1-hour-30-minute drive. The schedule there is thin - treat it as a fallback, not a first move. Booking a different airline does not burn your money: if your MSP flight was canceled and you do not travel on it, the unused ticket comes back as a refund or credit.

Train instead of plane?

The Blue Line light rail connects both terminals and downtown - useful for reaching the city or a hotel while you wait out a disruption. For an actual way out of a canceled flight, the realistic options are a rebooked seat at MSP or the drive to Rochester above.

Stuck overnight

Ask the airline what it covers before you book anything: most large US carriers commit to a hotel, or reimbursement, when an overnight disruption was in their control (mechanical, crew) - weather is usually on you. Lock in tomorrow's seat before hunting for a bed; seats vanish faster than rooms. Lounges if you hold access: Delta Sky Club (multiple locations) and the Escape Lounge.

What the airline owes you

Canceled and you choose not to travel: a full cash refund to your original payment method under US DOT rules, on any fare type, whatever the cause - a voucher only replaces it if you knowingly accept one. Checked a bag? Here is exactly what happens to it and when the bag fee comes back. The full rundown with figures: Know Your Rights.
